Despite OEM recommendations, the issue persisted. “We contacted GCS, and they conferred with their engineering team,” the engineer explained. “We experimented with several different materials and updated the piston and packing designs before finding the best combination, which tripled the service life to over six months — without sacrificing piston rod or cylinder liner life.”
The GCS team’s commitment to communication and collaboration has also been a key factor in their success. “They’re always providing requested updates on projects and are proactive with notifications of any schedule changes, whether good or bad,” the engineer noted. This transparency has been critical during high-pressure situations, such as equipment outages, which can cost millions of dollars a day. “The GCS team understands the need for expedited service and works around the clock, through weekends and holidays, to deliver what’s needed.”
Beyond operational efficiency, GCS has also supported the refinery’s environmental goals. “The team improved the reliability of our valves in hydrogen sulfide off-gas applications by replacing ring, rider, and packing materials. This increased our on-line equipment availability and significantly reduced our off-gas flaring emissions,” the engineer explained.
